  1. I bought three Bluetooth speakers hoping ONE would be usable. All three ended up being keepers for different reasons. I bought the Cambridge SoundWorks Oontz Angle 3, the Anker Classic Portable, and the Boombotix REX.Portability: All three are fantastic, no real difference. If you want to nitpick, the Boombotix is the smallest, the Anker is next, and the Cambridge is the largest. But again, none of them are really different. I give an edge to the Boombotix for it’s clip, it’s more flexible. The clip is super hard to get open though. You aren’t clipping it to anything thick.Construction and Ergonomics: All three seem durable and well built. The Anker is clearly the best of the three. It’s classy, attractive, and feels substantial. And it doesn’t walk itself around too much with vibration. But the On/Off switch is terrible. It’s tiny and hard to use, you have to use your fingernail. The other buttons are functional, but not as easy to use as the other two. The Boombotix is sturdy and easy to use, the buttons are a little close together, but they work well. It’s walks around a little on a hard table, but not terribly. You will have to watch it though, or it will eventually fall off a table. The Cambridge Angle 3 is sturdy and I love the shape. It works really well being able to either lay it down or stand it up. The function buttons are easy to use. The On/Off button is not great, it’s too small and in an obscure location. So much so that they have to put a little sticker pointing to it. The rubber end caps are a mixed blessing. I think they will help protect it, but they get really dirty really fast. They pick up every tiny little bit of dust. I recommend standing it up if you put a lot of volume through it because once the bass starts to thump it will bounce and wiggle it’s way all over the place. It’s actually kinda funny looking. But standing up the passive radiator on the bottom doesn’t propel it all over.Sound: I was actually impressed with all three. None of them are on par with the large Sound Dock or Klipsch type speakers, but they could hardly be expected to compete with those at this size and price. The Cambridge is my favorite because it has more bass than the other two. It’s a clear winner in bass response. probably about 10-15% more. And that’s important to me. The Anker actually has the best overall sound. It’s rich and clean. It’s probably the “best” speaker of all three. And the Boombotix is clearly the loudest. It really puts out some sound. none of them sound bad at all. I would have been happy with any of the three if I hadn’t heard the others. But hearing them side by side the Angle 3 fits what I need best.Connectivity: None were bad, but the Boombotix lost connection first, the Angle 3 and the Anker had no trouble at all at 30ft even through walls (but none liked going through a stone fireplace LOL). None were an issue connecting. They were all easy as pie to pair. The Anker was slowest when powering on and trying to find my phone, but we’re talking about less than 10 seconds total time for the slowest.Intangibles: The Boombotix has some features that are really appealing. There’s an audio out jack, which you can use to run a second speaker (of any make). So that give you options. Send Bluetooth to the speaker and then it will send it to a second speaker. If you don’t have a Bluetooth connection on one of your larger speakers you can send signal to the REX and it will connect to your larger speaker. Options are nice.I chose the Angle 3, it fits my needs best with the best imitation of bass, but the others are good enough that I’ve decided to keep them and use them too. The Anker is nicest, and the Boombotix is loudest and most versatile. I can’t really speak to longevity since I haven’t had them very long, but I don’t think any of them will die on me. Don’t be afraid to buy any of these. Just pick the one that fits best.

I love this speaker. It’s size and weight are perfect. It’s no bigger than my hand it weighs less than an average apple. It’s water resistant and to test that I put it in the shower the moisture nor the water affected the speaker. However there are two things go that I don’t like the little flap to charge it is hard to open and the biggest downer for me is that it’s louder with an apple device than my samsung s7. It’s weird so I have to carry both phones while on a bike ride which I don’t mind but the sucks. Oh and the life it’s amazing it hasn’t died and I bought last week it truly is all day battery. Oh last thing the clip is super tuff which is good bc it won’t fall off. Pairing is easy and fast the buttons are also well made. It’s a good speaker.

I WANT to like this little speaker, I like it’s looks…but…it gets 2 stars taken. let me explain.1st off: The 1st thing I noticed was the clip. The clip isn’t even screwed on by both screws that attach the clip to the device. 1 of them fell off/out as soon as I took it out of the packaging. The clip is hard core & stiff.,seems very sturdy & would be more than adequate if it had both screws where they are supposed to be. Not sure how long the clip will last having one 1 screw in place….Due to the clip screw, I take off a star.2nd: there is branding on the front grill (which I do not mind, it looks cool) that is NOT pictured on the product listing. Not a con, just not expected..3rd: The sound quality…I read SEVERAL reviews before making my purchase. They gave this product high marks for it’s ability to get loud despite it’s small size. Personally, I do not expect much from such a small device as I understand it has limitations. I do not expect super Hi-fi, hence I do not expect boomy bass or really punchy mids…physically it is asking a bit much of physics but there should be at least a small amount of mids just by the properties of the speaker in an enclosure. That said; solid bass is pretty much a no show to the party, the mids are there and do contribute to the over all tone of the device but they lack “luster” due to the overwhelming highs. The highs are SO bright & shrill they destroy what sound quality it might have. I’ve put a black piece of gorilla tape over the center of the speaker grill to tone down the highs a bit becuz they are so harsh…which has helped unless it is in my pocket or on my hip. In which case using the tape isn’t a “need”. When turning the device to max volume, it distorts, g it doesn’t distort horribly (depending on what you track you are playing) but it does distort as it tries it’s hardest to produce bass..I do want to mention – When you put the device in your pocket the shrill harsh highs drop off & you are left with hearing a more balanced tone & over all sound. No distortion can be heard either. Maybe they took this into account knowing ppl would be putting this in their pockets when designing this device..?Knowing that speakers need a little time to “break in” I am going to give it a day or 2 to see if it relaxes a bit on the treble & the mids start to come through…it might even be able to show signs of bass which might even start to come into play. As for now, the thing sounds like crap & a waste of money. So much so I might even contact Boombotix & see if they will send me a new device…cuz this one sounds terrible. If you double tap the “play/power” button twice it will switch tracks – nice feature. Volume buttons are very responcive, click nice & work very well.4th:the flap that keeps the USB charging port protected from the elements doesn’t really want to stay sealed. It keeps wanting to open. Not cool…BUT what I did end up figuring out is IF you can put the very small round tab in the super small hole located at the tip of the cover (where you open it) it seems to stay in place. I like the look of the device, it has a nice matte finish & seems quite durable overall. Very cool looking packaging presentation & easy to remove with Zero struggling. Pairing is also quick & painless.

I just bought 4 of these to give as presents for Christmas, getting it done now when I noticed the price they are going for these days. I bought one a couple years ago at about 4x the cost so I jumped when I saw the price. I noticed others complain of the sound as well so I was skeptical. Being able to compare the original version to these I’m able to come up with a verdict. If you notice almost every color is sold by someone different. Having bought 4 different colors from various re-sellers I can tell what’s going on. 3 of them do have the high treble, almost unbearable sound (grey, blue, mint), only 1 had the original good sound (black). Trading world sold both the black and grey so I’m not sure why there would be a difference there. I’m going to send the 3 back and try for the black only. Family will have to keep track of their own. Some of the packaging and face plates were different between the four, but there wasn’t a telltale sign for me to notice. The grey did have a plain metal plate, and the on/charging/connected light was in a different location, I’d stay clear of this one for sure.

I use this speaker when I’m moving around the warehouse (which is over 10,000 sq ft and includes operating different machinery) and it holds up pretty well. I was worried about having a speaker that I could drop off a crown picker which can go over 30 feet in the air but I can clip this one to my harness and not have to worry about it. Previously I have dropped it at lower heights (such as from my office desk to a carpeted area) and have not seen any plastic damage. From wear and movement the rubberized coating is starting to rub off but is not pealing. Also if you accidently slide the clip cover off, you will either need a blocker or some seriously strong hands to get it back on. I’ve been using the speaker for over a month now and the clip is still as strong as ever. Which can cause issues in itself because I have to be very mindful of places that I might not be able to remove the clip from. There is pound to fit option here because you’ll have to either remove the clip cover (which is also a pain) or remove the amount of material it is clipped to (I did have to disassemble my harness one day to get the clip off, nothing too bad but was really annoying).

The high frequencies coming out of this thing are so shrill that it is actually painful when pointed toward you. Apparently, I’m not the only one who has observed this; user clavinetjunkie on youtube has a video demonstrating the effect. I also observed the same thing he did (in his follow-up video) when using the auxiliary cable input – less pain and more appropriate levels for actually listening (to music); but uh, using a cable kind of defeats the purpose of a BLUETOOTH speaker, right? …So, that said, it can get relatively loud, although I could not reproduce the Boombotix website’s specification claims of 90/94 dB output at 2 feet for Bluetooth/AuxIn respectively. With either input method, I had to move the speaker within 1 foot of an SPL meter to even get a 90+ dB reading using a 1 kHz test signal (both A and C weightings) at 100%, which I assume is what they would have used to test this unit. It might be suitable as a speakerphone with the high frequencies as they are, but your mileage may vary. Midrange frequencies do exist and lower frequencies are at least simulated by the passive “woofer” and a bit of (physical) thump at higher volumes. It was quite humorous to send it a 1 Hz signal and watch the tiny “domes” pulsing slowly up and down, and although this produced no human-audible sound, I could hear artifacts up to 20 kHz as well, so It will attempt to reproduce a full range signal.I did not test run time since that will obviously vary with volume, hardware usage (Bluetooth/AuxIn/AuxOut/Mic) and battery temperature… and as I said, the thing is painful to listen to, heh.Something else I noticed is the Bluetooth range/reliability being a bit less than with all my other devices. The manual lists a 100 foot range, which no Bluetooth spec I could find supports – currently, most common devices are either Class 1 @ 100m (~300ft) or Class 2 @ 10m (~30ft). In reality, however, it starts cutting out sooner around obstacles and just cannot maintain a signal at the same range as my other Class 2 (10m) devices.Other discrepancies from the specs/manual (which, by the way, is not included in the box; it’s download only):Charge time is given as “One Hour” on the website and “less than 100 minutes” or “1.5 – 3 hours (first charge)” in the manual. It took 4 hours on the first charge (understandable from a possible deep discharge, which is, of course, not good for a lithium chemistry battery; boooo!) and subsequent charges are taking around 3 hours after a “full” (blinking red LED) discharge. From “blinking red LED” to full “solid orange/yellow” the battery gets ~1500mAh charge (measured, no spec for this is given anywhere).A small thing, but noticeable: charge indicator LED is in a different location than the manual states (actually in middle of device horizontally) which means the microphone must be somewhere else as well. Finally, water resistance is listed as IPX5 (website) and IPX4 (manual)… Hmm, obviously we’d hope it’s at least IPX5.It’s a shame, because I wanted to like this speaker. The woodgrain is both sexy and classy! …but that’s about it. :(Update:Boombotix customer service finally reached out to me after reading this review and claimed to take customer service “very seriously”, offering to do whatever it takes to “make me a happy customer”. However, when I tried to accept the offer, I was greeted with the old bait-and-switch. After going back and forth with their so-called customer service rep, they attempted to get me to pay almost twice what I paid for the original unit just to receive a replacement that *might* sound better than the one I purchased. I thought maybe it was a miscommunication and referred them a second time to the offer made here on Amazon – to no avail.I then decided to do a little further research on this company (and its owners) and found that they are basically a group of scammers running a Kickstarter con-game. They promise several “great sounding” items that appear to have been developed by a fake R&D team because the final products just don’t deliver (according to my and others’ real-world tests). Apparently they’ve done quite well for themselves at the expense of their “customers” (marks), although luckily their latest scam (called the Hurricane) failed to get the supporters they needed to fall for it. Look it up.So yea, in a nut shell: this company is a joke. I recommend that you save your time, energy, and hard-earned money by staying away from anything with the Boombotix name attached.

Wicked! Second one I own. Amazing sound and call quality fromantic a small box. Perfect for cycling and any other outwo or activity. Sets up in seconds too.

  20. This has been one of my greatest cycling acessory purchases ever. Great sound quality, have cycled with this many times in the rain and is still fully functioning, it’s also sustained quite a few bumps and bruises. Another little add on that has come in handy quite a few times is that you can take calls with it! Get this speaker.
